When is World Heritage Day?

The 36th annual World Heritage Day is on 18th April 2019. The day was decided upon in 1983 at the UNESCO General Conference.

Is the Lake District a World Heritage Site?

Yes, indeed it is, surprisingly only declared as such as recently as 2017. However, there is no doubt that the Great Lakes deserve this high recognition. Especially given the official definition of a World Heritage Site is “of cultural, historical, scientific or other forms of significance”. Well, the Lake District certainly qualifies from all angles.

As for being of cultural relevance, there’s everything from famous landmarks, residents and stately homes. Many of these also cover the historical element, as well as having the natural landscape that can be traced back generations. Which leads us on to the Lake Districts scientific importance, with a wide range of flora and fauna, there’s much to be discovered in the region.

What to do for World Heritage Day?

The best way of finding something to do for World Heritage Day in the Lake District is to get out and about in the countryside. The whole of the Lake District is a World Heritage Site, so once you’ve arrived in Windermere it’s easy to do your bit.

Originally World Heritage Day was to be named International Monuments and Sites Day. As such you can help celebrate by visiting exactly that. So mark the occasion by visiting a variety of castles and stately homes in the Lake District.

There are other ways of taking part as well. Organised walks, talks and day trips or tours will help make that decision a little easier. Regular events often run at cultural places of interest, town halls and local museums.

Other World Heritage Sites Around the World

In order to put the list of World Heritage Sites into context, the Lake Districts are now up there with Venice and the Great Barrier Reef. It’s not just landscapes and places of natural beauty on the list either.

The great pyramids of Egypt and the Taj Mahal are also included. As is the Great Wall of China, made famous for being a man-made structure visible from space.
