5 Things to do in Coniston

Whether it’s enjoying the wonderful scenery or learning more about the local history and its famous residents, here are 5 of the most popular things to do in Coniston:

  • Old Man of Coniston
  • The Ruskin Museum
  • Brantwood Arts Centre
  • Steam Yacht Gondola
  • Outdoor Activities

Old Man of Coniston

With such a beautiful landscape to explore, hiking across the fields and the Old Man of Coniston is the best way to get back to nature. What’s more, you will be rewarded with some incredible views across the fells and Lakes of Cumbria. In particular, there is a 6.5-mile circular walk, which at its highest point reaches an elevation of over 800 meters.

The Ruskin Museum

While the museum may look unassuming as you pass by, it is in fact much more than just paying homage to the great John Ruskin. The former Lake District resident went on to become one of the world’s most famous of art critics of the Victorian era.

Not only that, but John Ruskin was also an accomplished artist himself, as well as known as a social thinker and philanthropist. However, the Coniston based museum also has other exhibits, including remains of the infamous and world-record breaking Bluebird speedboat.

Brantwood Arts Centre

Whatever your interests, a visit to the Brantwood Estate has something for everyone. Take a stroll through the grounds and admire the flowers and fauna, as well as the walkways alongside Coniston Water.

Inside the main house, you can step back in time or simply stay for a coffee within the onsite café. There are also several permanent and touring art exhibitions on display, as well as workshops and the occasional theatre production.

Steam Yacht Gondola

While staying at a hotel in Windermere, you can certainly make the most of the waterways. In particular, Windermere Lake Cruises. However, the Steam Yacht Gondola in Coniston also takes some beating.

Having originally set sail in 1859, the Victorian boat has long since been fully restored to former glories. Allowing both locals and those on holiday in the Lake District, to experience this rather special way to travel.
