Here we look at 5 bike rides in Windermere and the surrounding areas. Wherever you decide to go cycling in the Lake District, one thing’s for certain and that’s you’ll love the beautiful scenery. It doesn’t matter if it’s a casual ride along Lake Windermere or a mountain bike ride across the mountains. There’s a bike ride in the Lake District for everyone, with many of the bike rides in Windermere, near our very own spa hotel.

Windermere Bike Ride

Although this circular cycling route may seem somewhat challenging at 28 miles, it does give you the chance to embrace Windermere from all angles. Plus being a circular, you can adapt the route accordingly to your start point. As well as Windermere itself, you’ll ride through parts of Ambleside, Grasmere and Hawkshead.

Claife Heights

If you’re bringing a mountain bike with you on your package break in the Lake District, then get ready to take in the views from Claife Heights. It’s a fairly moderate ride, but one that still comes with steep up hills and tricky descents. Although you have to plan bike rides in Windermere to enjoy Claife Heights. In fact, within Arthur Wainwrights “The Outlying Fells of Lakeland“ you will find a just as rewarding walking route. Starting at Far Sawrey and taking in Moss Eccles Tarn part way.

Loughrigg Fell

There are of course plenty of places to go cycling in the Lake District, other than sticking to bike rides in Windermere. Loughrigg Fell is about 20 minutes-drive away and you can enjoy another circular route with fantastic views over the lakes. Along the way be careful as some of the cycle paths take you off-road, but it’s still a fairly straightforward and satisfying ride.

Windermere to Kendal

Not all bikes rides in Windermere are circular routes, but if you fancy taking two wheels to nearby Kendal this one’s for you. As well as starting near Brockhole Visitor Centre, you’ll also ride from Burneside to Stavely along the river Kent.

Windermere to Wray Castle

If during your package break in the Lake District you fancy a proper day out, then Wray castle is a local tourist attraction. You can reach the castle on a bike from our Windermere spa hotel within the hour, although it does involve crossing the water. As such giving you the excuse of an early rest as you take the specially allocated Windermere “bike boat”. Then it’s on your way cycling alongside the Lake until you reach your destination.
