What’s on in the Lake District in May 2019

The Lake District in May comes with many events to choose from. As always, giving those taking advantage of the 2 bank holidays and visiting outside the tourist season plenty to choose from.

Festival of Light – Keswick

This Saturday (4th May) sees the 5th Lakeland Festival of Light. Having previously raised money for charity’s in Nepal, this year is one closer to home and the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs. Expect spectacular scenes as the Lakes are quite literally, lit up.

Theatre by the Lakes – Keswick

Staying near Keswick and a chance to embrace a little bit of culture while overlooking the water. This year Theatre by the Lakes brings the Addams Family and the Rite of Spring ballet to the Lake District in May 2019.

Gandeys Circus – Kendal Rugby Club

The Greatest Show Tour by Gandeys Circus reaches the Lake District in May, running from Thursday 2nd to Monday 6th. As well as classic circus acts, such as clowns and acrobats, keep an eye out for the African warriors taking to the stage.

Food and Drink Festival – Muncaster Castle

Another well-established event takes place at Muncaster Castle from the 4th to 6th May. While the castle is a popular tourist destination all year round, the food festival also attracts 1000’s to the Lake District in May.

Whinlatter 10k Race – Whinlatter Forest

If you’re a keen runner then you’ll be in need of your spa suite and hot tub once you’ve completed the gruelling Winlatter 10k race. There are 2 dates to choose from, the Forestry 100 Running Series on the 12th May and a second chance on the 25th May. Both of which require booking in advance.

Wild Walking Weekend – Scafell Pike

While sitting back relaxing in your spa hotel hot tub is all very well, it’s also good to get out and about. So why not embrace the countryside, with a walk to nearby Scafell Pike. Organised by the RSPB, there are several dates in May for keen bird watchers to choose from.

Keswick Mountain Festival – Keswick

While incorporating a number of individual events, the Keswick Mountain Festival is worth mentioning in its own right. Featuring everything from cross-country running and outdoor activities to motivational speakers, there’s even a DJ set from Happy Monday’s dancer Bez.

Cumbria International Motor Show – Westmorland

One for motor enthusiasts is the Cumbria International Motor Show on Sunday 19th May 2019. Giving you the chance to get up close to some of the most stunning cars ever made. Ranging from the affordable to those some of us can only dream of one day driving.

Whit Holiday Race Meeting – Cartmel Race Course

If you’re planning a bank holiday break in the Lake District, then the Whit Holiday Race Meeting takes place towards the end of the month. Why not enjoy a day at the races this May Bank Holiday.
