Where to Play Tennis in Windermere?

With the Wimbledon Tennis championship well under way, it’s time to play tennis and pack your rackets for a package break in the Lake District. After all, if you’ve booked a spa suite in Windermere, why not enjoy a game or two while you’re away. Once you’re at your hotel after playing, you can either raise a glass to the winner while in your hot tub or enjoy a sports massage at Aphrodite’s Lodge.

Where to Play Tennis in Windermere

There are of course plenty of outdoor spaces in the area, but knowing where to play tennis in Windermere isn’t always obvious. As such, it’s always good to know if the courts are part of a public park or if you need to book in advance.

Windermere Lawn Tennis Club

It may not quite be Wimbledon, but the Windermere Lawn Tennis Club is the next best thing. As a privately run club the grass courts are well looked after. There are only 2 courts available so it’s best to enquire if you need to pre-book.
Although all ages and abilities are welcome, there’s a chance to explore your competitive edge too. Every Tuesday and Sunday, they host social tennis matches from 6.30pm in the evening.

Better Glebe Park, Bowness

As well as somewhere to play tennis in Windermere, Better Glebe Park has a whole host of outdoor activities available. There are 3 tennis courts and only a short walk from Lake Windermere itself. You don’t even have to worry about bringing your own rackets, as equipment is available to hire at a small cost.

Once you’ve finished playing tennis, if you have any energy left then try one of the other outdoor activities. You can play a game of pitch and putt, or a less serious round of crazy golf. Alternatively you can even give Segway riding a try.

Ambleside Park

It’s only a short drive down the road to Ambleside, or you if you’re staying at accommodation near Windermere bus station it’s only a few stops away. Head towards Brockhole visitor centre and you will soon find 2 courts to play on.
Although it’s worth pointing out neither are floodlit. As such, even on these long summer evenings it’s worth remember the sun will start going down sooner or later!

White Platts, Ambleside

Elsewhere in Ambleside there are a further 3 courts available at White Platts. This is a wonderful park with other facilities also available. While there may not be a full size golf course, the 90 metre hole at the pitch and putt can still be challenging. So to can the crazy golf, while the bowling green offers as a further alternative to tennis but at a more relaxed pace.
